Fish over 14 inches were also within acceptable limits. Some of the largest fish were collected near Prophetstown and Grand Detour, as well as below the dams.

The Rock River and its tributaries originate in southwest Minnesota near Holland. They flow south to Rock Rapids and Rock Valley, Iowa. In addition to the Rock River, several other rivers are important in the area, including Mud Creek, Beaver Creek, and Split Rock Creek. The Missouri River and the Mississippi River are north-oriented, so the Rock River and its tributaries were formed in a south-southeast direction.

The Rock River has a large population of flathead catfish. Most of these are found in the lower end of the Rock River, near Prophetstown State Park. The average length of an adult flathead catfish is about 20 inches. For this reason, the Rock River is a popular spot for fishing and rafting in the Rock Valley.
